Mystifyed Live! Episode 8-- Halloween Special 2012 (Part 1)

Happy Halloween!

Season 3, Episode 8

Happy Halloween from everyone here at Mystifyed Live! We hope you are enjoying your costumes, parties and candy. On this, our 2012 Halloween special, we welcome back our good friend, singer/songwriter/actor, Sean O'Shea. Sean, our first guest of season 3, previously mentioned his love for horror movies. Because of his passion for those dark and twisted films that send a chill down the back of your neck, what better way to celebrate the Halloween season then having him join us once again.

We told of our ridiculous costumes, shared some of our favorite horror movie moments, and as always, had some great questions from our viewers.  But almost on cue, moments after we mentioned the famed Amittyville Horror house things took an unexpected turn. We began to have audio issues, from there our video started to go in and out and before we knew it, there was a completely unexplained catastrophic failure. We were dead in the water with no ability to continue the show.

It became apparent that someone... or something didn't want us to finish the show. This was not our first encounter with Halloween episodes mysteriously failing. going back to our first season we experienced something similar. You can read about it Here. Is it possible that Mystifyed Live is cursed?

We hope that you enjoyed what we were able to save from this years Halloween special. We want to thank Sean for once again joining us. You can follow Sean on Twitter and like him on Facebook as well.

Note: Due to the technical issues- we have rescheduled the interview and will post that once it has been completed.

Magicians At Magic Shows

People often get puzzled when they see magicians talking about going to magic shows. They think that because we may know how some of the tricks are done, that it takes away the mystery of the performance. While in some cases that may be true, there is a lot more to what magicians see at shows then most people realize.

Just because we may know how a trick works doesn't stop us for appreciating the way it is performed. Former guest Paul Vigil talked about how much he respected those that are bringing back the classics of magic. He felt that it was important for those who are looking to get into the art, to see how the older tricks can be adapted for a modern audience. Sometimes a magician may know a method, but the way it is presented is what impresses them the most.

A lot of magicians take pride in the way their performance looks and feels to their audience. When fellow performers are at a show, we try and to observe as much about the performance. How does the show make us feel? Is it engaging? Do we feel comfortable in the audience? It tells a lot about the magician performing when he or she takes pride in every aspect of their show.

Some performers focus on a classy, sophisticated style. Others go for a high energy type of show. It depends on what type of character the magician wants to portray. As fellow magi, we want to be entertained by that character just as much as anyone else. We look for ways to connect to the person on stage just like we would as a typical spectator.

With all of these elements in play, it may seem like we are thinking about a lot more than the magic. In reality by combining all of these things into our experience at the show, it gives us a deeper appreciation for the magic and the performer. We can't help but think of these things. It is the nature of the beast.

Now we want to hear from you, the readers. If you too are a magician, what do you look for when watching other performers. Let us know by sharing your thoughts on Twitter and Facebook.

Mystifyed Live! Episode 7-- Shastina Eloff

Season 3, Episode 7

Whether she is working with famed music producer Teddy Sandman, guest starring in music videos or smiling for the camera; Shastina Eloff puts her heart and soul into every project that she is apart of. Growing up in a small town outside of Sacramento, this classically trained singer turned hip-hop / pop artist, quickly realized she did not want to be just another pretty face. She wanted to change the stereotypes and show people that she can be herself and still be nice, sexy and maybe even a little sarcastic.

She recently had a guest spot on 'Got Cash' the newest single from Los Angeles based musician Whiteboy Rob and put the finishing touches are her own single, 'Boy Toy'. When she is not in the studio or on the set, Shastina has made quite the name for herself in the modeling world. This week on Mystifyed Live we had the opportunity to interview this multi-talented superstar.

Despite having to adapt to the changes between living in a small town and living in LA, Shanista is very much about stepping away from the typical vibe of the industry and being someone who doesn't take herself too seriously. Ego's should be checked at the door, having a big head will not get you far. If you are kind and respectful to those you work with, that is where you will grow as both an artist and a person.

We want to thank Shastina for joining us on the show. We hope that you will take the time to show her some love and check her out by visiting her official Website, Facebook and Twitter.

Mystifyed Live! Episode 6-- Joe Diamond

Season 3 Episode 6

From his early days performing in his hometown of Chicago to predicting the 2011 Oscars live on the radio, magician Joe Diamond has made quite the name for himself and he is only in his twenties. His story began as simply as many other magicians. A magic set lead to so much more than just a box of tricks. You may recognize him as good friend and mentor of magician Bill Cook in the award-winning documentary "Make Believe". We were lucky enough to have Joe join us this week on Mystifyed Live to talk about what he has been up to.

Joe Diamond performing as part of his stand-up magic act.
Over the years magic has evolved as an art form.  In the example Joe used things like Harry Potter presenting magic in a way that the current generation of audiences can relate to. So when magicians are able to create routines and effects that seem similar to things like this, it allows the newer generation to connect to the material better. This is another reason why Joe believes that all of his material can be performed for almost any audience. By making these connections it gives more meaning to the magic.

Joe describes himself as sincere, comfortable and strange. To get an idea of the kind of person Joe is, he spoke about a reaction he got after doing his Ambitious Card routine for a couple, they simply shook his hand and said "Thank you. That made our day."  It is this kind of primitive connection with his audience, that he cherishes. We would like to thank Joe for joining us this week. For more information on Joe Diamond and all of his upcoming projects you can check out his official Mystifyed Live guest page by clicking HERE

What Inspires YOU?

Inspiration: It is all around us. Everything we see, everything we hear, even the people we interact with can be used as a driving force to create something beautiful. One question that we ask many of our guests is, "What inspires you?"

In music, sound is the basis for their art form. But when you ask musicians what inspires them to create specific compositions, the answers can be as diverse as the music itself. Life experiences, both positive and negative, tend to have a large affect on the songs that a they write.

To a magician, what is more powerful than taking something ordinary and making it do something extraordinary? One of our recent guests, Ivan Amodei spoke of how his family is the catalyst behind his creativity. He even told a story about how they were all out together at a local deli and just looking at a map gave him a new idea.

Inspiration can come from many different places at the most unexpected of times. Former guest Sean O'Shea sometimes even turning to horror movies can serve as one of his inspirations.

Now we ask: what inspires YOU? Share your thoughts with us on Facebook and Twitter.

Mystifyed Live! Episode 5-- Paul Vigil

Season 3: Episode 5

When was the last time you were truly amazed by something? You saw something you could not believe and sat there for a moment and questioned everything. Magic allows magicians to create these moments of amazement for their audiences. True astonishment is hard to come by. It takes a master of the art to create such a moment. Paul Vigil is one of those exceptional individuals. His table is his canvas. His objects act as his paint. It is when these elements come together that Paul is able to craft an artful masterpiece of wonder right before your eyes.

Paul performs Wednesday nights at King Ink  inside The Mirage
Direct from his weekly show at the Mirage, it was an absolute honor to have Paul in studio with us this week. It took seeing just three tricks to start the transformation from fascinated child to award winning magician. Each effect that Paul performs he hopes transcends what most people think of when they hear the word "magic". He wants you to believe you have complete control, so when he shifts that control unexpectedly and you are left wondering what happened, it is in that moment you have experienced his genius. His attention to detail goes back to those he learned from. Treating the classics of magic the way they were meant to be treated. When asked to describe himself in three words Paul chose to describe his approach to magic as wanting it to be elegant, poetic and beautiful. When you see him perform, you then understand just what he means.

Below is the video of Paul's performance live on our show.

With the belief that close-up is the future of magic, it is clear that Paul wants to take the art above and beyond where people think it can go. We are so grateful that Paul took time out of his whirlwind schedule to be with us this week. We hope that if you are ever in Las Vegas that you head on over to the Mirage on Wednesday night and experience Paul's magic for yourself. If you would like more information on Paul Vigil check out his Guest Page on our website.
