Steve Carell As "Burt Wonderstone" on 'Magic Magazine' |
The movie begins in a manner familiar to most magicians. Burt discovers magic thanks to a kit that his mom got him for his birthday. Throughout his discovery he gains confidence and eventually forms a partnership with his best friend. The two go on to become headliners in Vegas and are faced with twists and turns along the way. One thing that sticks throughout a majority of the film is the personification of many classic magic stereotypes. We see everything from wild costumes and elaborate presentations, to plenty of corny catchphrases. Although the movie pokes fun at magicians, it is done in a tasteful and non-offensive way. As magicians, we know our idiosyncrasies very well and can laugh at ourselves.
After reading other reviews labeling the movie to be lack-luster, it seems that people had felt that pairing Steve Carell and Jim Carrey in a movie once again would bring the same level of humor as in other movies in which they co-stared. It simply took a different direction focusing on self discovery and encouraging the audience to push themselves to the next level. However, the movie did not fall short in humorous moments. We felt it was a good blend of comedy and inspiration. It gave a humorous but honest look at some of the things magicians face as they go through life. The story mixes in what it's like to taste success, having to make difficult changes, and re-discovering magic, all while learning about yourself and what magic really means to you.
Overall the film was fantastic. If you enjoy an inspiring story, witty comedy, and a little bit of magic, then this movie is a must see! We would love to hear your thoughts. Leave us a comment below.
